Murder on the Orient Express

Add to Memories Share
At last! This is one Agatha Christie I know word for word, have seen it in so many versions, but I am so happy for Mr. Suchet that he has the chance to unravel this one murder, it has been a long-time wish of his, finally realized. Looks like it will be a powerful, exciting film.

Oh, my God, this is pure madness, Suchet plays Beria, a counsellor of Stalin /The Red Monarch, 1983/, who actually fears and hates his superior. Young Suchet, hilarious! Watch out for the basket of eggs on the table!

Boating: a real British countryside pastime

Add to Memories Share
David_smiling
David Suchet has always been fascinated by boating, especially narrowboats that he himself steers skillfully along the English canal lines in the country. Ever since the purchase of his first narrowboat in 1973 he has been a passionate boater not only as a pastime, but also as a cause to support. As Chairman of the River Thames Alliance and Honorary Vice President of the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust, he is a fervent fighter for the restoration and protection of traditional water channels, a beautiful feature of the British countryside.

It is really enjoyable to hear him speak about his waterways experience: )

Melmotte, the self-made English gentleman

Add to Memories Share
I was not aware Trollope was so entertaining!  His prose is like Jane Austen minus all the idealizing, naive stuff about eternal love and ladies choosing according to their liking blablabla. It is all realistic, cynical, outright, and, well, yes unseemly, like Malmotte himself. Well, he is more than unseemly, he is utterly gross, eating like a wild boar, drinking incomparable amounts, saying what he thinks - unprecedented!

Who would not want to know - when offered the opportunity - the story of his ancestors, where his talents and interests originate from, and to see his own features on old photographs of great-great-great grandparents? The BBC, in their series Who do you think you are? accompanies well-known personalities on their journey in the distant past.
First, I linked in a video footage about David discovering the story of a sea captain in the family.
Below that you can find a link to the entire story of David's genealogy search.

In a fictional situation in our time a devastating seastorm accompanied by tidewaves as high as mountains hits the Northeastern coast of Britain. News on Poirot episodes

We can expect new episodes in 2009, source: a Guardian article:

"ITV has ... ordered four new Agatha Christie adaptations, including a new version of Murder on the Orient Express and three other TV films based on Christie's Poirot stories, which will feature David Suchet continuing his role as the fastidious Belgian detective."

David wanted to play Orient Express very much, I am really glad for him!

I'm in awe under the influence of this brilliant, brilliant performance! A powerful, contagiously passionate, magnetic yet imbalanced personality played by an equally forceful, but perfectly balanced mind: David Suchet. Watch this film, if you can.

Mrs McGinty's Dead

Add to Memories Share
Who was Mrs McGinty? Oh, nobody, just a stupid charwoman! What was she like? Nobody really remembers. Yet, the life of the wealthy neighbourhood is pretty much stirred up when Poirot appears to reexamine the case. Who has some dirt piled up under the carpet? Every one of them, it seems. The upperclass is annoyingly condescending as usual in Christie stories.

A nice review

Hercule Poirot (David Suchet) says at one point, "The question is, can Hercule Poirot possibly be wrong?"

"No one can always be right," Mrs. Lorrimer replies.

"But I am! Always I am right. It is so invariable it startles me. And now it looks very much as though I may be wrong," laments Poirot, "and that upsets me. But I should not upset, because I am right. I must be right because I am never wrong."

check out this report of a true Hastings fan:

thehunkymouse blog

The hunkymouse says:
"However good Agatha Christie was as a writer, the personality of Poirot himself has been over-written. We've seen many actors of genuine genius tackle his fussy, self-obsessed personality - Albert Finney, Peter Ustinov - but powerful though they may have been, they did not manage to capture the character.

Suchet, you could argue, did not manage to capture the character, either. Rather, he exposed the real Poirot. You watch him in the part, and you realise: this is what Hercule Poirot was really like. Agatha Christie, you can tell, knew something about him, but she lacked the insights that would have brought him truly to life; she failed to capture the milieu correctly, and - inexplicably - reported much of his speech incorrectly, garbling his mannerism and his delivery. No matter! - Suchet has excavated from the archaeology the true Poirot."

Thank you for this brilliant insight!

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Add to Memories Share
Quiet country life for Poirot, the days of well-deserved retirement and relaxation. However, growing marrows brings the murderer instincts out of him. And the picturesque, friendly village, King's Abbot, shows its real side! Some lovely scenes of re-uniting with the good Chief Inspector Japp, who is, as usual, quite clueless, but retains his dignity, all the same.

Four and Tweinty Blackbirds - 1989

Add to Memories Share

The merit of this episode is that it shows how not indifferent Poirot is to women, as he feasts his little eyes on some female curves a few times here. We can also see the first forensic detectives, a cameradrie that proves how traditional sleuths are not on the verge of extinction, Hastings tastes the rabbit but we do not learn more about the rules of cricket by the end.

The Third Floor Flat - 1989

Add to Memories Share
In this episode there is a beautiful car that runs like a bird, which is, of course, a nonsense, as we know, birds do not run. Tere is a badly written theatre play, a bet lost by Poirot, one crime arranged for the stage unsolved by the great detective, but the other one causes him no difficulty whatsoever. And there is a little hint to a young lady that once enchanted Poirot's heart.

The Incredible Theft

Add to Memories Share

Oh, how highly entertaining! Classic Poirot at its best! Funny, with a real car chase scene, Poirot smirking under his mustache all the time, Hastings undercover, Japp annoyed and searching through even the undergarments of a woman! Real good fun, not to be missed. Call me a freak, but I find Poirot in the early movies outright handsome :-) I promise, I will provide screencaps as soon as I can!

I've just seen this movie, a wonderful piece. It has such a great atmosphere! The country manor, the park, the flashy cars, the house's interior and decoration - all of these so impressive! I wonder if anyone has seen this part and what you think of it. It seems to be one of the latter pieces, Poirot is not young here any more. Have you got any information on this?

Biography

Please note that some info in this text is outdated, check out the more recent entries, too!

David Suchet is an English actor best known for his television portrayal of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot in the television series Agatha Christie's Poirot. He is a unique actor who changes easily from one character to another. Every role he has played, from Arab terrorist and captain of a spaceship to Biblical Joab and Hercule Poirot, looks very natural. He can easily change his appearance without any make-up. If you see pictures of him from various films, it's sometimes hard to believe that this is the same man. http://d-suchet.narod.ru
